Icon of Our Lady of the Sign. 19th century

One of the most common iconographic types of the image of Our Lady is the Sign, based on the most important prophecy of Isaiah, who was the oldest of the four great prophets. The central theme of such an image is the incarnation of the Son of God in a human form. Mary is portrayed frontally with her arms raised to the sky in the pose of Orant, or Praying. There is a medallion at the level of her breast. It has the image of Christ in a special iconographic type of Emmanuel, representing Jesus in adolescence. Upper corners of the icon contain images of a six-winged cherub and a seraphim, which are the highest angelic ranks.
