Icon of the Miracle of George about the Serpent. Mid-18th century

The icon of the Miracle of George about the Serpent is a vivid example of the originality of the Uniate cult art. Icons acquire features of synthetic art, where painting, woodcarving, gesso carving and chasing are combined. The cult of St. George came from Byzantium. George was born in a rich, noble family, he was a Christian. During the persecutions of Christians, he abandoned his high position and defended his faith, for which he endured many tortures and was beheaded. The most famous story in his life, symbolizing the triumph of Christianity over paganism, is the salvation of the king's daughter from sacrificing her to a dragon who had settled in a lake near the city of Lasia in Palestine.
Embossed, copper with gold-plated mounting for Polotsk icon was made in the 19th century and repeats the pictorial composition of the icon. Only the shield of St. George is depicted not with a cross, but with the All-Seeing Eye of the Lord, which was typical of the 19th century icon painting.
