Icon of Saint Anthony of Padua. Mid-18th century

Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) is a Franciscan monk, a Christian saint, the patron of the city of Padua. The Saint possessed oratorical abilities and conducted educational activities. He is considered the patron Saint of the poor and traveling. Saint Anthony is being asked for help in finding lost values. The relics of the Saint have been kept in St. Anthony Basilica in Padua since 1263. The iconographic image of Anthony of Padua was not formed at once. In the earliest iconography, St. Anthony of Padua was depicted as a full-length figure with a book in his hands, sometimes instead of a book he held a lily, which was a symbol of purity. But the dominant motif was the image of Anthony of Padua in a black Franciscan cassock, belted with a string of beads hung, holding the Baby Jesus in his arms. A closed book is depicted nearby on the table as a symbol of the Saint's scholarship.
