Cross-Engolpion. 12th century

Cross-engolpion (reliquary cross) is a Christian relic; a cross that contains particles of the consecrated prosphora or relics of the saints. As a rule, the front side has an image of the Crucifixion of Christ, glorifying the atoning sacrifice of Christ, the back side has Our Lady with Evangelists or holy warriors, apostles. Crosses-engolpions were subjects of personal piety. Thanks to the revered shrines kept in them, they are endowed with special grace for a believer. Belief in their miraculous power is associated with the cult of holy relics developed in the Christian church.
The cross was found in Polotsk during archaeological excavations.
