Icon of the Old Testament Trinity. Mid-18th century

The doctrine of the unified and inseparable Trinity is the most important dogma of Christianity. The plot of the Old Testament Trinity (The Hospitality of Abraham) is described in the Old Testament.
In the centre of the composition on Polotsk icon, the Lord is depicted as three angels sitting at a table with a symbolic treat under the Mamre oak that symbolizes the tree of life that was in the middle of paradise. At the same time the tree symbolizes the tree of the cross on which Christ was crucified.
The master reflected the consistency and equivalence of the three faces through the similar appearance of angels and their clothes, as well as arranging them sitting almost abreast at a rounded table. Abraham is kneeling by the table in the foreground to the right. Above, his wife Sarah is peeking out from behind the door.
The icon was painted with oil paints on gold. Polotsk icon harmoniously combines the icon-painting tradition with excellent academic painting.
