Alexander Nevsky was a talented commander, a visionary politician, a diplomat, a defender of Christianity. The Orthodox Church canonized him in 1547.
Polotsk portrait has an inscription in the lower part of the canvas that says: “From the Putyatinskiy, Koprovskiy and Koshlayskiy societies on the day of liberation from the bondservice on May 1, 1863”, indicating that in the struggle for justice, people turned to the saints who they revered the most.
